I'VE PUT THE AUDIO AND THE VIDEO ON THIS PAGE, JUST TO MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY IN THE PAGE FORMATTING. I CAN REMOVE THE AUDIO IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS, HOWEVER AND I COULD PUT THE VIDEO ABOVE THE TITLE, WHERE THE AUDIO IS. A collaboration between Victoria Fenner, (sound) and Stefan Rose (visuals), composed as part of an Ontario Arts Council funded project called “Seeing Sound”. The purpose of the project was to provide space and time for Victoria to develop a philosophy and practice to guide her artistic practice combining sound and visual art.
For the visual interpretation, Victoria gave Stefan the fully composed composition and asked him to follow his own inspiration to create the visual accompaniment. The only thing she asked was that there could be no changes to the audio.
The audio composition consists of the sounds of a northern lake punctuated by plucked piano strings. It is an immersive ambient experience which places the listener at the heart of a rainstorm on a northern lake. It is a dark, though not frightening place. Uncomfortable and slightly un-nerving, it removes the listener from the familiar environment of the sound in the room and immerses them in an environment which is somewhat disorienting. The addition of the sounds of piano strings being hit, struck and plucked contributes to this heightened atmosphere where familiar sounds are recontextualized and placed in a setting where they do not usually occur. This piece is about the outer world brought inward, confronting the listener's sense of the familiar with the sense of alienation in the darkness where the forces of nature are in control.
Stefan used the themes explored in the audio as a launch point, but took the journey in a different direction. He decided to use flowers and gardens as the visual metaphor, since flowers seek light. The result is a journey through the life cycle of a garden from full flower to decay. the basis of a visual journey through a tangled garden. Looming plants and insects, in environments with broad washes of darkness and colour, pull the viewer along on a quest for sustaining light. I CAN PUT THIS LOGO IN A BETTER LOCATION, I'M JUST WAITING TO MAKING SEVERAL CHANGES TO IMAGE FORMATS ALL AT ONCE.
